fresh52 is so happy to have had the opportunity to participate and become a member of the Farmers Market Association.
In the 2010 America's Favorite Farmers Markets contest, over 50,000 people across the country cast their votes and shared info about their favorite market! They received so many positive comments from customers who really appreciate what their farmers markets have to offer to their communities.
Each and every one of the 1200+ farmers markets that enrolled in the contest helps ensure that our communities have farms growing and raising the delicious fresh food we all crave. By providing us with a place to purchase regional foods, farmers markets help keep farmers on the land so that they can continue to provide fresh food for our tables as well as community economic benefits and a wonderful place for us to gather.

Since 1920, we have lost nearly 67% of our nation’s farmers due to the increase in corporate farms and pressure to “get big or get out” . Shopping at the farmers markets supports local, family businesses and helps them keep their land and livelihood.
When farmers sell to agribusinesses and grocery stores, they only receive an average of 20 cents for each dollar spent on their items. The rest goes to distributors, marketers, and the store itself. When you buy produce from your local farmer at the market, that farmer receives 100% of the profits and you help a local small business.
“Food miles” refers to the distance food must travel in order to reach its ultimate destination. The amount of food air-freighted around the world has risen by 140% since 1992! Help reduce gas emissions -- Buy Local!
Nearly 25% of all the oil used in the United States is used for agriculture… most of this is used by industrial agribusinesses producing millions of tons of crops at a time. Help reduce oil consumption in the U.S. Buy food from your local farmer!

New research shows exposure to pesticides used on commercially-grown fruits and vegetables—particularly frozen blueberries, fresh strawberries and celery—appears to boost the chances children will be diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). In the study children who tested positive for a pesticide byproduct had roughly twice the odds of being diagnosed with the disorder. ADHD currently affects an estimated 4.5 million U.S. children and 4.7 percent of American adults.
